Connecting Our People with Purpose: Part 3

Proverbs 29:18 says, "Where there is no vision, the people perish..."

This truth is not just applicable for a nation or an athletic team, but it’s a truth best applied to every organization and business.  In Connecting Our People with Purpose: Part 2, we discussed how exhausting it is to wander around aimlessly. We can all likely relate to times in our career where we’ve sat in front of a computer, plugging away, and wondered, “Why am I even doing this?” That’s where vision and purpose comes in.

Vision and purpose define the goal, the target, the expected result from a day’s, a week’s, a month’s, or a year’s worth of work.  Having vision, direction, goals, and an overall purpose makes work and life in general, simply invigorating. It transforms everyday tasks from tedious to vital. It gives us each a sense of place, of belonging.

When it comes to HORNE’s Government Services focus area, our purpose and mission is easily defined – it’s in our name!  Our purpose is to serve government agencies while they serve their constituents.  This typically happens after a natural disaster, when people need help the most. Roughly 70 percent of our team has been affected by natural disasters, and lived through the aftermath. Now, faced with people, communities, and clients that are recovering from disasters throughout the country, our team can honestly say that we’ve walked a mile in their shoes. We are reminded each and every day of the struggles of recovery, so we get in the trenches and live out our mission of making recovery as painless as possible for others.

By nature, our team is focused on numbers and results. While we know our purpose, it’s easy for our view to get clouded in our day-to-day dealings. Although we make it a priority to approach our work with empathy, at times we can get so focused on results that we lose sight of our real purpose – to serve others and to impact lives.

In HORNE Government Services, our purpose is our passion!  We strive to serve our clients and those affected by natural disasters as we would want to be treated.  Our goal is to leave the state, city, county, or community and its people better off than when we found them. We truly have the ability to change our world for the better, whether it’s simply helping out a coworker, or changing communities as a whole. Whether an administrator or partner, associate or director, we strive to keep in mind that we are all a crucial part of the bigger picture.

I truly believe we are home to the most passionate, caring, and invested team in the country.  Some of this stems from the empathy of our experiences with natural disasters, but it’s our team’s commitment not only to our client – which is typically a state government – but our heart for people.

When you know your purpose and that purpose becomes a passion, the possibilities are endless.
