The Examiner – Insights on Fighting Financial Fraud

The Magic of Disney

Written by Jeffrey N. Aucoin | November 18, 2015

I find myself traveling this week to Disney World’s Grand Floridian Hotel to attend, network and present at the AICPA’s Controllers Conference. It is so easy to get swept up in the excitement at this magical place. There are princesses and pirates around every corner. The fireworks over Cinderella’s castle are amazing and a perfect way to end a day.

At this conference, I am sharing my knowledge on two topics. The first relates to fraud risks and balancing between trusting employees and implementing internal controls. The second topic addresses ethics and how most ethics programs aren’t working.

Unfortunately, there are many people in the business world who think fraud is a fairytale—that it is fiction. They also believe their ethical environment will lead their company to a happy ending. Essentially, they believe that their employees are conducting themselves in an ethical way.

I am very passionate about these two topics and I enjoy sharing this passion with others. The attendees at this conference are business leaders who can change the culture of their organizations to enhance ethical behavior and who can implement practical controls to mitigate fraud losses. I hope I can harness the magic of Disney to guide these business leaders to recognize these issues within their organizations and to make changes.

The magic of Disney is real. I love being here to network and learn from other professionals. I will be taking vacation next week and do not plan to publish a blog. I will be back in December.
