Some Risks Are Worth Taking

What do you do when you realize you aren’t happy with the job you have? At first glance, you might think, duh…find a new job. BUT, what if you love the firm you work for and the people you work with even more, you just don’t love the actual work? That makes the situation a little more difficult.

About a year ago, I found myself thinking auditing just really isn’t for me. That’s a problem when you have a great job as an auditor at a great firm. I knew that I wasn’t just going to magically start to love it, so I decided it was time to take a risk and find something new. I hadn’t gotten very far in my process, a.k.a. hadn’t actually started, when I was told by one of my co-workers about a job in a different department that she had seen our firm post. The job was in our finance department and seemed ideal for my situation. I would still be able to work for the firm I loved and still be able to see all the wonderful friends I had made, all while still using my degree!

When I decided to pursue the new job, I was fairly nervous. I wasn’t sure how my former team would take me making a switch. I decided I should just go for it, and I summoned the courage to have a conversation with some leaders in the firm. The conversations I had were incredibly helpful and encouraging. Within a couple of weeks, I was interviewing for my new position.

Thankfully, the job did work out! I love my new position and all the people I work with every day. I also love the fact that I still see all my friends I used to work with. I’m so thankful that I took that step out of my comfort zone to seek out this new job. It’s so easy to just stay where you are comfortable.

So, my advice to anyone who might be feeling reluctant to take a risk or even just a small step that’s uncertain, don’t be afraid! You don’t have to do it alone either. Call on influencers in your circle and even voices outside your circle that can help you see the potential to pursue different opportunities. Walt Disney said it best, “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.” I’m so thankful for the relationships I have built with my team members at HORNE. And I'm also thankful I had the courage to pursue a different path.
