Do You Believe?

I read something that startled me recently. According to a report titled “The Future of Work,” only 29% of employees believe they can achieve their dreams where they currently work.* Even more startling, when the report removed the executives and entrepreneurs from the data, that number dropped to only 9.8% who believed they could achieve their dreams where they currently work.**

Now, let’s add perspective. Those surveyed were not “unhappy” people. Of the same exact population:

  • 70% said they were “happy at this moment”
  • 72% said they felt hopeful and optimistic about the future in general
  • 69% believed in their own ability to achieve their dreams

So, basically, they just didn’t believe achieving those dreams was possible with their current employer.

Not only was this startling, but it made me feel sad, too. (That’s way too many people going to work every day feeling like it’s pointless!) Then, of course, I thought about our team at HORNE. And I just had to know—what would our HORNE team members say if they were asked that same question about achieving their dreams at HORNE?

I’ll admit, I had some anxiety—but I also have a lot of faith in the Wise Firm we are building. So, we asked every team member this question at this year’s State of the Firm: Do you believe you can achieve your dreams at HORNE?

The response?

76% of our team said, “YES! I believe I can achieve my dreams here!”

The entire experience has put into perspective for me something I am not sure we always appreciate: we are building a very special firm. Sometimes, because it is our “normal” we become accustom to this way of life and think this is how everyone gets to live life. But, it’s not. The Wise Firm is a special place. I, too, believe I can achieve my dreams here. And I am so very grateful for that.

*“The Future of Work” surveyed more than 7,000 employees from across the globe.
**This number referenced line-level workers and mid-managers working in non-startup environments
