2020 Vision: It’s Not about Your Eyesight

Thinking of Our 2020 Vision as a Roadmap

I have a confession to make:  I use Google Maps every day for my commute. You may think that my commute is arduous, complicated or that I’m new to the area. Turns out, my drive is only 5.6 miles, involves three turns on four roads, and I’ve lived in my current home for four years.

I also use Google when I’m walking to meet friends or driving just about anywhere. I like to know the best way to get to where I’m going and when I’m going to get there.  I like to know potential obstacles. If there is a roadblock, accident, bad weather or wild Pokémon in our path (it can happen!  see below), we might need to plan ahead. Perhaps we might bring additional supplies for the journey or commit additional resources. We might even need to take an alternate route.

At HORNE, our 2020 Vision is the Google Maps for our firm and for our team. It allows each team member to understand where we are, where we’re heading, and, importantly, how we will know when we get there.

The 2020 Vision is a literal, written document that many of our team members have memorized, which helps us all to see our path and defines key milestones along the way. Using our 2020 vision as our roadmap, we can identify which obstacles in our path hinder our journey and then plan on the best way to address them as a team. We can also identify which opportunities and obstacles are significant, but not necessarily critical to our success. Theoretically speaking, if a bridge is out on a road that isn’t on our path, we know we don’t need to spend our efforts there, instead we focus on building bridges and overcoming barriers that will directly impact us.

The 2020 Vision allows our team to share a common vision of our future. Just as importantly, we share a vision of the journey. Uniting our team in moving forward to achieve our goals, it inspires us to greatness.  We understand our path and our future because we understand where we are trying go.

Our 2020 Vision underlies nearly every interaction with each other and with our clients. It guides how we impact our communities, too. When we collaborate to proactively guide and serve, we join together to reach better outcomes for our clients, for our teams and for ourselves. The strength of working for an organization with a strong, visible vision is that each team member knows the path we’re taking to deliver unrivaled value. Because we know where we’re going, we don’t shy away from obstacles, even those wild Pokémon, because we understand how we will arrive there together.
